Stonaria exists because of a particular frustration: the best
stone in the world is usually shown badly, sold slowly, and cut too thick to
put where it belongs.

WHAT WE DO

We gather stone the earth made once — recovered blocks, rare seams, quarries
that produce a few slabs a year and then stop. Then we cut it thin enough to
go where full-thickness stone cannot: up a wall, across a ceiling, around a
curve, into a lift lobby that could never have carried the weight.

The collection is chosen, not stocked. Nothing here was ordered in bulk
because it moves. Each stone is here because somebody looked at it and could
not leave it.

WHY EVERY STONE IS PHOTOGRAPHED THREE TIMES

Stone is a material that changes with the light, and a single photograph is
therefore a kind of lie. Every stone in this collection is shot under museum
light, daylight and evening light, and you can switch between them on the
page. It is the closest thing we have found to standing in front of the slab.

Even that is not enough for a decision that matters, which is why we will
always send a sample, and why we would always rather you saw the actual slab.

WHY IT IS BY INVITATION

An account here is opened by invitation. That is not theatre. A collection
this small cannot be sold to everybody at once, and the alternative — an open
shop with a waiting list of people who will never be served — is a worse kind
of exclusivity than an honest one.

If you have no invitation and this is the sort of thing you care about, ask.
There is a waiting list and a person reads it.
