The Weightless Stone

A slab of marble is mostly ballast.

The part anyone looks at is the first millimetre or two. The rest is there to stop that millimetre breaking, and it is also the reason stone has always had to stay near the floor. What we sell is that face, on a back built to carry it — strong enough to hold the stone, light enough to lift by hand.

What lies beneath the surface

Cut one of these pieces in half and this is what you would find. Six layers, each doing one job.

Natural stone layer
1mm–10mm
Quarried stone, cut to the thickness the project calls for. Nothing is simulated and nothing is added: the surface is the stone.
Protective sealant coating A finish against moisture and wear. It is invisible, and it does not alter the colour or the character of what is beneath it.
High-strength bonding layer A formaldehyde-free industrial adhesive, fusing the stone permanently to the core beneath it.
Aluminium or fibre honeycomb core The layer that carries the load, so the stone does not. Light enough to lift by hand, stiff enough to be trusted for decades.
Bonding layer The same adhesive again, holding the backing panel to the underside of the core.
Structural backing panel A rigid base, sealed against moisture on site. Once the wall is finished, nobody thinks about it again.

What it allows

The vein is unchanged, the colour is unchanged, the quarry is unchanged. What changes is weight — and weight was the only thing standing between this material and the rest of the building. A ceiling can take it. A curve can be wrapped in it. It goes up eleven floors in a passenger lift without ceremony.

Built to last

Every piece is bonded to last as long as the room around it does — through humidity, through years, through what a wall is ordinarily asked to survive.

Each one carries our own guarantee of replacement, should it ever be needed. Terms and conditions apply.

Before you ask

It is real stone; only its back has changed. Aluminium or fibre is decided with you before anything is cut, on the basis of where the piece is going and what it will be asked to do. There is no standard size — the piece is made to the room. And if it ever needs replacing, that is already agreed.
